Katla Geopark One-Day Pre-Conference Tour
Enjoy the magnificent scenery and geosites of Katla UNESCO Global Geopark. Stops include two of most famous waterfalls in the geopark, a glacial outlet, the black sand beach of Reynisfjara, a viewpoint for Eyjafjallajökull volcano, and two of the three towns within the Geopark.
Along the way we will have views (if it is a clear day) over central volcanoes (Katla, Hekla, Tindfjöll and others), numerous glaciers, vast coastline and offshore islands, glacial carved valleys, old coastal cliffs, glacial rivers and outwash plains created by large glacial outburst floods.
We will depart from Hljómahöll (conference location) in Reykjanes Geopark and drive towards Katla Geopark. The drive to the western part of Katla Geopark will take about two hours. Once within the Geopark, we will make several stops at some of the most famous geosites in Katla, including stops at the two of the most famous waterfalls in the geopark, Seljalandsfoss and Skógafoss waterfalls, the Sólheimajökull outlet glacier, a glacial outlet from Mýrdalsjökull ice cap (Katla volcano is under the icecap), the black sand beach of Reynisfjara and its columnar basalt and sea stacks, a viewpoint for Eyjafjallajökull volcano and glacier, and a short stop in the towns of Vík and Hvolsvöllur, two of the three towns within the Geopark.
Along the way we will have views, if it is a clear day, over central volcanoes (Katla, Hekla, Tindfjöll and others), numerous other volcanic formations, several glaciers and glacial formations, vast coastline and offshore islands, glacial carved valleys, old coastal cliffs, glacial rivers and outwash plains created by large glacial outburst floods.
The weather in Iceland in October can be unpredictable, so we recommend good and warm clothing, including a warm hat, scarf, gloves ext. and good hiking shoes, preferably waterproof.
Most of the sites are easily accessible and only a short walk, but Reynisfjara beach and Sólheimajökull outlet glacier can be more challenging.
